Impervious Surface Mapping
An increasing number of local governments and organizations need standardized, high-quality spatial information across all terrain to aid infrastructure planning policies and activities, as well as to assess their impact. They also need to be able to compare different regions and cities in a standardized way. Many are coming under pressure to assess the cost- and environmental impact of impervious surfaces on their water resources, for example. Maps containing information about the quantity of impervious surfaces and their relationship to the water cycle and waterways are used by communities for issues such as planning, site design and stormwater assessment billing. But this kind of mapping has, traditionally, had its difficulties. In particular, the challenge of accurately assessing land tax divisions has been compounded by poor quality aerial data, time-consuming heads-up analysis methods (involving high labor costs) and the lack of standardized approaches. By deploying Definiens software these hindrances can today be addressed in a cost-efficient, reliable and timely manner.
